Personal safety tips

Calm, practical guidance for everyday life — because confidence starts long before you ever reach for a product.

Awareness before anything else

Most unsafe situations are avoided, not fought. Keep your head up, limit headphones and phone scrolling in public, and notice who is around you. Trust your instincts — if a street, lift or parking area feels wrong, leave. Choosing a different route is never an overreaction.

Plan your route, share your route

Stick to lit, busier streets, even when they take longer. Before heading out, tell someone you trust where you are going and when you expect to arrive. Location sharing with a friend or family member costs nothing and is one of the simplest safety habits you can build.

After dark

Walk with purpose and keep to open, visible areas. Arrange transport home before you go out so you are not waiting alone on a pavement. If you regularly walk home from work or campus after dark, vary your routine occasionally and consider walking with a colleague or friend.

There is safety in numbers

Join or start a walking group, a run club or a campus buddy system. Community groups and neighbourhood watches exist in most South African suburbs — being connected to yours means faster help and better local knowledge about which areas to avoid and when.

Set up your phone for emergencies

Save your local emergency numbers and a trusted contact on speed dial, and learn how to trigger your phone’s emergency SOS feature without unlocking it. Keep your phone charged when you go out — a flat battery removes your fastest way to call for help.

Carrying a self-defence product responsibly

A self-defence product is one part of a safety plan, never the whole plan. If you carry one, know how it works before you need it, keep it accessible rather than buried in a bag, store it securely away from children, and check that owning and carrying it is lawful where you live. No product can guarantee your safety — awareness and avoidance always come first.
